About Fill My Cup!
What is Fill My Cup! ?
Founded by Sheila Kirby, Fill My Cup! is a 501(c)(3) Tax Exempt Nonprofit Organization and a North Carolina nonprofit corporation, located in Charlotte. We provide tuition-free one-on-one and small group tutoring (with the help of trained volunteers), to adults, out of school youth, and families. Volunteers are trained to provide help with reading, writing, and math skills on levels beginning with the nonreader to the pre-GED. Fill My Cup! recruits students and volunteers, trains new tutors, matches volunteers with students, and provides a support system for its students and volunteers. Tutoring lessons are confidential and are scheduled at a time and approved places convenient to both student and tutor. Our organization is governed by a volunteer board of directors who directs activities to raise funds, provides awareness about low-literacy and its effects, and oversees all student and tutor programs.
Who do we Serve?
Our volunteer tutors are trained in the required adult literacy curricula (computer based with supporting print materials) used by our organization to include pre-GED and GED software and the Official Practice Test. Available reinforcement print materials, on-on-one, and small group tutorials allow students to establish their own pace in learning needed adult basic education skills, to include reading, writing, math and GED preparation subjects.
What is the Need?
Statistics reflect that in our Charlotte-Mecklenburg communities that more than 22% of adults have extremely limited or low-literacy skills. Also in Charlotte alone, 72,000 adults do not have a high school diploma or GED. Each year 4,000 four-year-olds in our area are identified as having poorly developed language skills and have other deficits that undermine their ability to learn. The families of our communities need your help.

Who Helps?
Fund-raisers, churches, civic organizations, state agencies, and private individuals financially support Fill My Cup! These monies are used to purchase materials for the reading programs and support the other needs of providing our adult literacy services to the community. Student referrals are received from churches, job programs, public libraries, Wal-Mart Literacy Initiative, and other local community-based agencies. Donations are tax-deductible.
Affiliations
Fill My Cup! is an affiliate of the North Carolina Community College System. The organization also holds membership with the North Carolina Literacy Association (NCLA). Many other local community service agency collaborations also strengthen the support services provided to our students. FMC is also an approved agency of the annual Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) and approved by the Better Business Bureau.
